For buyers and sellers of handmade goods...

For those that that sell handmade goods, it is difficult (at least for me) to completely track all my expenses. Of course I get excited when I make a sale and record all the information, deduct fees and shipping...but what about all the supplies I purchase? Ad space? Seminars or classes? Somehow I *forget* to write down everything I buy and there are two reasons for this: 1. I get lazy and 2. I'm scared to see how much I REALLY spend.

I promised myself last year that I would keep a better record of things, and I have...... of sales. Supplies though? Not so much. After about March I just stopped recording things. Next year I promise to try harder! Is record keeping as hard for everyone else as it is for me?

And for buyers of handmade goods (that includes us sellers too!): Buy less, spend more! Try to go all handmade and make gifts more personal. Not only will you search for the 'perfect' gift for the reciepient, but you will also be supporting an independent artist rather than the children in china making plastic toys for $2/month.

As for myself, the majority of gifts I'm giving this year are handmade by independent artists (or by me) and just a couple of them are store bought. It's hard to go completely handmade (I want to meet the person who builds TVs from scratch AND keeps them at a reasonable cost!) but I definitely did try my hardest!

Organization and Time Management

Running a small business is hard, running more than one is even harder! No matter if you run one or five, it still takes organization and time management to get it all done (especially if you work a 9-5 too!) I wanted to give a few tips that I use (though by no means am I a guru of organization and time management!)

I am student teaching (I graduate in December, yay!), I have a weekend job and my tiny etsy shops so organization and time management are key for efficiency.

Organization:

Get a medium size accordion filing system (kind of like a coupon organizer) and keep all your income and expense receipts in there. This will be especially helpful during tax time!

Have your supplies/stock and work station in one place so you know what you have and what you are running low on.

Keep your finished products/stock away from your supplies so you know what is completed. You will also know what you have, what you're selling and what you need more of.

If you are shipping or have listing fees, etc. keep a spreadsheet of all your costs. For example, I made myself a spreadsheet that automatically calculates cost of my item - fees + shipping paid for - actual shipping cost = net profit.

Write dates on everything so you can track sales and watch trends!

Write lists! Lists keep me sane...every time I think of something to do/buy/call etc, I write it on my list and cross it off when I complete it!

Time Management

Again, Lists!!!! Keeping a list, not only allows you to be more organized, but saves time because you're not constantly trying to remember what you had to do/buy/call!

Set aside specific time, keep a planner if you have to, to get specific things done. You may be able to say something general like "Tuesday I will take photos" or something a little more specific like "Tuesday, between 12-2, I will take photos." This will give you a schedule to keep and know that you need to stop doing something and start taking your photos!
Set goals! Set goals to have XX amount of items made by the end of the week or if you can, do a daily amount. Set goals to have photos, items made and XX products listed daily. Treat yourself when you accomplish a goal!

Easter Egg Scavenger Hunt

Are you up for a chance to win prizes totaling over $270.00? Do you want to have some fun doing it? Then come join our 2nd annual Scavenger Egg Hunt at the Out Of The Box Sampler. We are holding it this year with our OOTBS Etsy Team members. It will be much easier then last years event. It will be held in our Etsy shoppes, but you do not have to be a member of Etsy to play in the egg hunt.

Here's how to play:
You must begin at the OOTBS Etsy team shoppe. You'll find it HERE We will be hiding our team scavenger hunt egg picture among the listings in our shoppes. Check the listing in the team shoppe for the egg picture and the name of the first shoppe in the hunt.

At each shoppe, you'll look for the same team egg picture. Once you find it, the description in that listing will tell you the name of the next team shoppe in the hunt. Along the way, there will also be keywords listed at some of the shoppes.
You must keep track of each shoppes name in the order of the hunt and also any keywords in order also.
When you get to the final shoppe in the hunt, you'll be given the directions on where to email your shoppe and keyword list. If you have all the shoppes and keywords in the correct order, you will entered into the drawing for the prizes.

The first person to email me all the correct answers will win the grand prize basket valued at $60.00!

Everyone else with the correct answers will have their names put into a drawing to win 2 other baskets and various individual prizes.

Weird, wonderful and strange

I was taking a look around Etsy, trying to find a birthday card for my son. Sounds easy, right? No. His birthday lands on a really cool day of the year, St. Patrick's Day, and they have neat stuff for that day. Now, last year when I went looking, I found a couple things, but I lost the links when my computer died. So, in frustration, I just went to another place and typed in "St. Patrick's Day, Birthday Cards" and I found this. It's not a card, but, this is wow, neat, weird, strange! Look!!!

They look so innocent, don't they?? All cute and green. Just waiting for the next person to come along and-

BAM!!!! They explode!!!!

Each frog is HANDMADE glycerin soap (that we purchase from a local soap maker) that has been scented with peppermint. The GUTS of the frog are made of our secret bath bomb recipe including sea salt, citric acid, bicarbonate of soda a yummy cherry scent and more.

You can use these soaps as you would any normal soap, but when the warm water hits the center...

WOW!!! The GUTS foam up and bubble out of the frog and turn red...and smell great! EWWWWWW....COOOOL!!!!!

(O.k., really they do not per say "explode", that probably would be illegal. Our frogs are like a bath bomb or bath fizzy.)

Oh, did we mention that these soaps are good for your skin too?

I recently received an email from a very dear friend that had some quotes, sayings and thoughts that just made me smile. I've been thinking of this blog all day, smiling, then I thought, why don't I share? Even if just one person has her heart touched, gets a smile on her face, then, it's worth it.
Nubia is a French woman who started her blog in 2005. She is married, with a daughter. Her goal is to inspire, motivate and touch others by publishing all kinds of poetry and quotes. She has a blog for her "Good Morning Cards" and a web page. She has a little of every thing!

Didja hear? It's up for sale, now! Get your cards out, ladies, because this month promises to be special! St. Patrick's Day goodies, Spring goodies...wow! (The first day of Spring is March 21, and I can't wait for that!) Couple things are new this month, so, here it is-

We have made a few changes regarding the boxes this month too. We will no longer be shipping food samples that do not have a long shelf life in boxes shipping to Canada or Internationally.

Also, we are making available a limited amount of boxes each month that WILL NOT have food samples in them. They will still have the same number of samples as all the other boxes, but will not contain any food samples. March 2010 Sample Box Preview, Pt. 2

Today, we are going to preview Sarah's Treasures, Mylingys Purr-fect Candles, The Bubble Room, The Briare Patch and Bellas Beauty and More.

Sarah's Treasures offers many different flavors of lip balms, with a promise of mineral make up on the way. I had a look at her ingredient list, and liked what I saw-Sweet Almond Oil, Beeswax, Stevia and flavor oils. Plain and simple, and why mess with something that works? (Sarah's Treasures)

Ok. I have to admit that I'm a cat person. That is why I just love the name of this next shop-Mylingy's Purrfect Candles. Sorta just rolls off the tongue, doesn't it? And, if you read in the "About Me", you'll see where the name comes from. With candles and tarts in lilac, butterfly garden and daffodil, you'll have the Spring time feeling even when it's still raining!

Next on the list is the Bubble Room. I love soap. I am a scent-aholic, besides being a cat person and a mom. So, after a few clicks through this store, and I fell in love. Why? Her designs are super cute. She has great scents listed. She has some soaps that will delight the kid in all of us, big and little. And, she donates 5% of her sales to her local no-kill animal shelter. I mean, how can you lose with a store like this? (The Bubble Room)

The BriarePatch is up for a look-see now. They make their soaps in my old home county of Sonoma, in California. I see they make their soap in cold process way, which is what some call the old fashioned way. Nice, creamy lather is usually the result, and I love their ingredient list! Olive, Palm and Coconut Oils top the list, with some soaps having Tussah silk, honey, rice bran oil or beeswax added in. They also make salt bars too! (the briare patch)

Wow!! So, I just jumped over to Bella's Beauty and More, expecting bath and body. Just bath and body items. Well, was I in for a surprise-you have to go over there right now and look at this-

Rainbow Cake

Do I have your attention now? It's 7 layers of yummy, nummy goodies! Here, this is the description from her site-

"I make these cakes two different ways. My favorite- For each layer, is a different flavor..including layers of; cherry,orange,lemon,vanilla,wildberry,strawberry...so yummy. March 2010 Sample Box Preview

March. Hmmm. What does this bring to mind with you? St. Patrick's Day? Spring? Greenery? Flowers blooming? Any and all of the above? March's box from Out of the Box Sample box Out of the Box sampler has several contributors that will answer your call of Spring!

This month's sponsor is Girls Like Trucks from over on Etsy (girlsliketrucks), where there are some really, really cool items. Now, what does this shop have to do with spring? They have hair accessories and some clothing, each one cuter than the next. Now, I have to admit I have a son, and I wouldn't trade him for all the tea in China, but sometimes, when I see some really cool girl stuff, I wish for another child. A girl child. You know what I mean-frilly dresses, Mary Jane shoes, bow ties for the hair. Well, I have to say that doesn't last very long, especially when I find a shop like Girls Like Trucks! Rhoda Rose (chocolate covered pretzel rod)-I didn't think I would like the combo of chocolate and pretzels, but, I do! Wow, these were good! Sweet chocolate covered pretzels doesn't sound that good to me, but my mouth really enjoyed the combo of sweet to salty...my mouth is just watering just writing about them! Different Kitchen (chocolate chip cookies)-These were ok. I bet these were totally awesome when fresh,but, by the cookies got to me, they were hard and stale. Bathgasm (Ginger Lime)-I have heard so many good things about this company. First off, this company's name makes me blush. (yeah, well, I'm a cheap date, lol!) I just read the name, and I turn pink. Jodi's Craft Emporium (2 tarts-oatmeal, milk and honey, and mulberry cream)-Out of the 2 tarts, I liked the Oatmeal, milk and honey the most. In fact, I still have it-it's incredibly long lasting! Rocky Corner SoapWorks (Mocha Love soap)-First off, it wasn't a sample, but a full sized bar-I have to appreciate that, and the design in the bar was pretty. I did take it for one test drive, and it lathered wonderfully. But, I couldn't get over the scent. When I first opened my sample box, all I could smell was mint, and I'm not a mint kind of gal, and this bar of soap was full of mint. The description of the soap reads (partly)- Everything a woman loves !!! All rolled into one soap !!! Chocolate, Coffee and Peppermint! I guess I'm not every woman. Don't get me wrong, a little mint I can handle, I love York Peppermint Patties, and a true mint I can handle in smallish doses in my bath and body. Pearlcreek Goat Milk Soap Co.(Incensed Soap)- I have never had a big chunk of patchouli scented soap before, and I was hesitant at first. I mean, I thought I didn't like patchouli! Guess what! I like it, I like it!! And I really like the huge sample Pearlcreek sent in-in fact, I had to cut it in half, it was so big! I'm not sure why it has charcoal in it, it makes a big mess in the sink, but hey, it smells great, and lathers even better! Ugly Duckling Designs (3 heart shaped tarts, Sassy Sweettart scent)-I'm not sure of the scent, can anyone fill me in? To me they smelled like fruit loop cereal. And boy, they sure pack a punch! T & D Candles (votive candle in voodoo love)-Very impressive votive candle. Highly scented, looks like chunks of pinks interspersed in the candle to make it look different than the run of the mill, average candle. Ultra cute! (http://www.tdcandles.net/)

Hippie's Creations (Winter fresh soap)-Nice sized sample, creamy white. Minty, but not overpowering. Left my hands feeling nice. I did notice though that this soap was a bit soft, like it needed to finish curing. (www.hippiescreations.etsy.com)

Sweet and Savorys- I think I got the Moist Chocolate Fudge Chocolate Chip Cookies. I'm going by process of elimination, as this was a package not labeled. The flavor was good. Made With Love (Toffee)-I received a nice sample of toffee. It had a hint of mint to it, but I'm not sure that was intended. I must have been one of the few people on earth who has never tasted toffee before, so I have no basis of comparison. It was really good! Sweet and Kind of-I'm always looking for blank cards to stash away, and this one is a definite keeper. It's so cute! It says, simply, "Love grows". After being married for such a period of time (I'm in my 40's, so I'll just let you guess) little cards can be a nice way to show your beloved your feelings any time of year.
